Though her navigational metaphors lose force with repetition, Beck's voice is light, down-to-earth and refreshing. Having found her way on her own journey from academia (she was a professor and researcher at Harvard Business School) to becoming an author (of Expecting Adam, a warmly received memoir about the birth of her Down's syndrome baby), Beck currently consults with clients on redirecting their lives. She teaches that each individual has a core personality that encompasses one's desires, emotions and preferences, which is sometimes blocked by a social self that responds to external influences and cultivates survival skills. By far the most fascinating material is on how to read warnings from the essential self: low energy, lapses into illness, forgetfulness, addictions, Freudian slips and mood swings. She advises steering toward the correct path by eliminating negative influences and practicing elaborate self-esteem exercises. A section on navigating change weighs the book down while suggestions for dealing with serious emotions like grief and anger are somewhat breezy. In the end, however, the numerous self-quizzes, exercises and chances to laugh will allow many readers to overlook these weaknesses. Beck owns her own consulting firm, Life Design, Inc., where she redirects "lost" souls to their true paths in life. This, her third work after Breaking the Cycle of Compulsive Behavior and Expecting Adam, puts her company's philosophy into print. By combining thought-provoking exercises with play activities such as visualization, affirmations, and intuition, Beck here explores readers' inner thoughts on true happiness. She recommends that they set wildly improbable goals (WIGs) in order to find their personal North Star. This title differs from other self-help books by specifically defining a four-stage change cycle that happens to all humans many times during a lifetime. Stage 1, death and rebirth, defines a life-changing event; dreaming and scheming, the hero's saga, and the promised land follow. Other authors with similar messages are Judith Orloff, Anna Quindlen, Cheryl Richardson, and Bill O'Hanlon. Absolutely Excellent

Excellent book. I got it and immediately set myself down to read it. It will become dog-eared by the time I am ever done with it. Funny, practical, insightful and my gut says spot on, the book resonated with me in ways few have. As a 43 year old male - in the classic time frame for a "This is Your Life" moment, the book came highly recommended by a friend. Boy was I glad he set me on to it. The exercises are thought provoking and will require hashing and rehashing. The section on the change cycle was nothing short of amazing and so tied to my own experiences that I found myself looking at it over and over again - and realizing that most of my feelings are normal and the challenges achievable. A top notch resource from a top notch author.

with a great sense of humor too

Incredible book. I've learned so much from this. Martha Beck is such a unique and talented teacher, with a great sense of humor too. I highly recommend this book for people who are interested in learning more about themselves to help develop and get more clarity in life. It's also great for anyone who can tend to be hard on their self - and building more empathy for oneself. I think it's the best personal growth book I've ever read.

Hilarious, inspiring and useful

I love this self reflection, psycho therapy, listen within stuff so that's the caveat to my 5 stars. Journal in hand (which you need for Kindle version) I did every exercise and loved the journey - even the hard ones that take you to a dark place. Don't be fooled thinking you end with some a-ha moment that changes your life, but you do walk away with a framework and set of tools to listen to your body and self, really listen, and have the inspiration and feeling of support to do something about it and tell anyone who tries to scare you away from your dreams where to shove it.

And she's hilarious - I laughed out loud often.

I took my time with it, reading it side by side with some light fiction so the exercises didn't feel like a chore and that worked for me.

If you're in a shift period of your life, or wishing you were, or just looking for a better way to deal with the inevitable changes life throws your way - get a journal and read this book.

WOW-very hot!

I am just now reading Lori Fosters older books since I am new to her books!This one was very hot and romantic...You watch 2 people who cant stand each other based on their opinions of each other-but they come to find out how wrong they were about each other-and it took a dog bite to do it lol- You watch them fall in love and you cant help but wish this book didnt have to end!...you laugh and smile....this is a perfect 10+ ! A very romantic fun and hot read...This book has been out a while but I am writing this for Loris new fans who havent picked this one up yet-GO BUY THIS ONE! You will love it!You will be left with a smile on your face just as you would with any of her books!

standard, cliched

Well. I am so obviously not Lori Foster's reader.

It started with page 1 and the heroine's name: Lace. Big groan. This is a name you'll find only on a stripper or a romance heroine. Yes, I know Lacey is a real name, but even the Baby Name Wizard doesn't list "Lace". Okay, that's minor, and common to a lot of romances. Anyone know why that is? Drives me nuts.

The niggles just kept adding up. You don't have a "hoard" of friends. If someone's your "erstwhile" slave, it doesn't mean they're your devoted slave--it means they used to be your slave. And a secluded cabin doesn't "allot" privacy. Sheesh. Just use simpler words, if you're not sure of the meanings.

Except for the name, I only noticed those things because the book itself irritated me so much. Lace is a radio sex therapist, who's bitten in the butt by a dog, and at the ER, the doc who stitches her up is none other than Dr. Daniel Sawyers, the brother of her best friend, with whom she has a mutual lust/disapproval thing going on.

She thinks he's a stick-in-the-mud; he thinks she's a slut. Oh, and a "liberal." Ooooh. And she's a bad influence on his baby sister, who's now dressing like a girl and dating. (Lace & baby sis are both 27.) But they're y'know, hot for each other anyway.

Now Lace needs somebody to help her out, what with the pain in her butt (sorry--I couldn't resist), so Dr. Dan decides to stay over. Since baby sis is busy shopping. Why this would make her unable to help her friend out for a couple of days is beyond me.

The proximity gets too much for Dr. Dan, so he comes up with the brilliant idea of pretending he's sexually dysfunctional so Lace won't be able to resist fixing him. And golly gee, is there anyone out there who didn't figure out by page 3 that Lace is a virgin? Is there a sex therapist heroine in all of Romancelandia who's ever had sex? I think it's in the job description.

The rest of the book is just standard, cliched stuff. The aw[...] perfect Christmas presents, the clearing up of misunderstandings, the sex scenes. It's tempting to say it's just an older book, but 1999 isn't all that old.

Fantastic.

I don't know why, but i've had this book on my shelf for ages (years) & the 2 follow-on stories, (Annie & Max's) without getting round to read them. I have just finished the private eye & men to the rescue series & thought i'll read the Sawyer series of books.

And did I miss a real treat. This book is fantastic. You can't get a better couple than Lace & Daniel. They are so full of misconceptions about each other. They don't like each other very much. It takes their family & friends to put them right. Daniel is outwardly reserved, but get him on his own & he is hot! Lace is very flamboyant, who loves colours, talks about sex as if she has personal experience of it. When in fact all she knows is what she has learned from books.

A fantastic read.

More about War than Revolution

The title of Gebru Tareke's book is slightly misleading: it is not about the Ethiopian Revolution -- how an ancient empire was violently transformed into an arguably modern political and social entity. His book instead covers how the 14 years the Ethiopian military spent 14 years waging war against its military opponents: Somalia, the Eritrean freedom fighters, and the Tigray Peoples' Liberation Front (TPLF) -- the last opponent being the current ruling group in Ethiopia.

Gebru does not provide a narrative of the fluctuating fortunes of the Ethiopian military; he provides details on only five of the numerous armed conflicts which occupy this period. One chapter narrates Ethiopia's successful Ogaden War. Another section retells the military activities of the decisive Battle of Shire, in which the TPLF decisively defeated a better-equipped yet demoralized and incompetent Ethiopian army. The remaining three chapters are snapshots at different moments of the final years of the Eritrean War of Independence.

Far more attention is spent discussing the dynamics of the Ethiopian military establishment. For most associated with the Ethiopian Revolutionary Army, Communist ideology was little more than a few required lectures and proper catch-phrases; according to Gebru, the majority were far more concerned with personal concerns like climbing up the hierarchy of power, lining their pockets or getting their children into foreign schools. Units were impotent due to chronic squabbling between military commanders and political commissars -- often for reasons unrelated to tactics or the well-being of their troops.

Although well-written & detailed, Gebru Tareke's approach may deter many readers who are more interested in reading a story with a beginning, a narrative arc, and a conclusion. But for discussing the more important issues of why one group of participants succeeded while others failed -- despite the heroism and sacrifice of thousands of participants -- Gebru's approach is the proper way to do help find the answers.

A great book

I decided to get this book because of the archives the Ethiopian government had made open to Gebru Tareke. I was hoping it would give an in depth insight in to the TPLF instead I found the book being revealing in some aspects like the battles, and the working of the derg. Nevertheless it's a great book and I diffidently recommend it to anyone interested in learning one of the darkest periods of Ethiopian history.

In his investigations into the phenomenon of Bible-belief, he realized that New Testament Christianity is history's most successful psychological manipulation. Unraveling the psychological devices around which the New Testament was built, Cohen's book illustrates in great detail how these ploys function.

Cohen sees much harm arising from the huge explosion of the Christian Right during the last two decades. He demonstrates how the indoctrination received in these churches undermines the mental health of individuals, causing widespread suffering, due to the vistims' reluctance to speak out. He also shows how this indoctrination makes bible-believers into unwitting supporters of far-right political causes they would otherwise reject.

Beginning in 1984, Cohen conducted a videotape monitoring of Pat Robertson. In 1987, he joined forces with Gerard Thomas Straub (a former producer of the 700 Club and author of Salvation for Sale) to expose Robertson's extremist tendencies.

Cohen made important behind-the-scenes contributions to stories about Robertson aired on NBC News with Tom Brokaw and West 57th Street, and to two front-page stories in the New York Times. In the course of his investigation, Cohen made numerous radio and television appearances. The final chapter in The Mind of the Bible-Believer chronicles that effort.

Good Insight

This book offers an insightful analysis of the mind-control devices inherent in a literal approach to the Bible. As someone who once subscribed to that mindset, I found Cohen's book to be very helpful in understanding my experience and the reactions of my close friends who still subscribe to it. I don't really buy Cohen's assertion that the writers of the Bible designed it to be potent as a mind-control weapon intentionally (possibly, but I imagine that it evolved on its own following the laws of nature -- that which was potent enough to attract followers survived while that which was not was lost), but it was helpful to me to explore what is attractive and what is ultimately flawed about that approach to life. As someone who is already familiar with the Bible, I found his in-depth analysis of Bible verses and their effect on people's lives to be a little slow, but I suppose it would be very helpful for someone who has not been exposed to christian fundamentalism before. I found his explanation that the belief system creates the very problems it promises to solve to be a delightful paradox that rings true. I recommend this book and suggest that anyone who wants to know what's up with Christian fundamentalism flip to the end where he describes the devices Christianity uses one by one.

Scary, scary, scary stuff

I had been an exchristian for a couple of months before readingthis. Even so, while reading it I felt like something bad was behind me - I had to turn around in my chair and look to reassure myself that there wasn't. I was shocked to find the imaginary boogeymen of Christianity rooted so deeply in my own mind.
We all know that there are Christian cults out there that practise mind control and brainwashing. This book exposes the fact that this is the norm for NT christianity, not the exception. The new testament is mind-control propaganda, propaganda that held all the minds of Europe in its grip for a millennium and a half.
It exposes the newspeak of christianity. The doublethink, the blackwhite, the slippery concepts and words. It explains why, as a christian, it's possible to read a passage of scripture over and over and still feel like you don't that makes it so difficult for a christian to reason about their faith. The dreadful fear at the bottom of christianity.
It exposes the poverty of Christian "love", and "joy". It demonstrates the equivocal definitions of 'truth' and 'freedom' that make a lie of "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make in faith, and how it is that faith is the opposite of sin. And in so doing, suddenly makes sense of every bible verse, every book, and every sermon on the topic that I have ever read or heard.
Get this, and get George Orwell's "1984" if you don't already have it. But if you are a recent exchristian, don't read it late at night like I did.

Most incredible book about the dangers of Fundamentalism

Cohen's book was so powerful, I had to read it more than once. Cohen uses his skills as a psychologist to critically examine the Scriptures, as well as the behaviors exhibited by Fundamentalist adherents. Finally, because of this book, I realized that I had indeed been emotionally damaged because of Fundamentalist Christianity. Everyone should read this book!
