Great quality

I adore Tolkien and own many copies of his books. But this is the copy I keep next to my desk and look at daily. The set is simply gorgeous.

The leather is high quality and thick. It's not just a thin veneer. The gold lettering shimmers in the light, as does the gilded edges of the pages. There's a lovely ribbon book-marker built into each book. They come with two-color maps that unfold so you can follow along with the voyages (or mount the map on the wall). Definitely one of those sets that will get treasured for decades and passed down.

So there are several maps, and several of the books include a full-color painting in the first few pages to highlight the content.

Well recommended for lovers of Tolkien.

Bought the LoTR, Hobbit, and Silmarillion from Easton Press in one set (not easy to find here, BTW). Love the books, love the Easton Press printings. The bindings are good, the covers substantial.

One thing: has anybody translated the runes (futhork), which are the "moon letters' on Thorin's map, on the covers? You will notice, if you do, that the word, "when" is terribly screwed up. On older printings, it's: "I I W E N". On the latest printings (which I own) it's 'corrected to' "H W E N".

BTW; The Easton Press The Atlas of the Middle-earth is the best, most legible copy I've ever owned/used.

BTW: despite my purchase being recent, the rune error is the original, not the "fixed".

Edit added: I purchased all mine directly from Easton Press.

Gorgeous books, too nice to read, should be used to display.

Had issues buying these from the seller. Not the sellers fault though, the package was either lost or stolen.

Ended up purchasing these books from someone on ebay later down the road, and they are an absolutely beautiful set of books. I don't think I could even read them, they're display pieces in my mind. I have my old paperbacks of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit that I'd rather use for hands on reading, These just need to be admired.

About the Author
Arthur O'Sullivan is a professor of economics at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. After receiving his B.S. in economics at the University of Oregon, he spent two years in the Peace Corps, working with city planners in the Philippines. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 1981 and has taught at the University of California, Davis, and Oregon State University, winning several teaching awards at both schools. He recently accepted an endowed professorship at Lewis and Clark College, where he teaches microeconomics and urban economics. He is the author of the best-selling textbook, "Urban Economic"s, currently in its sixth edition. Professor O'Sullivan's research explores economic issues concerning urban land use, environmental protection, and public policy. His articles have appeared in many economics journals, including the" Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, National Tax Journal, Journal of Public Economics, "and" Journal of Law and Economics." Professor O'Sullivan lives with his family in Lake Oswego, Oregon. For recreation, he enjoys hiking, boogie-boarding, paragliding, and squash. Steven M. Sheffrin is dean of the division of social sciences and professor of economics at the University of California, Davis. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton University, Oxford University, and the London School of Economics and has served as a financial economist with the Office of Tax Analysis of the United States Department of Treasury. He has been on the faculty of the University of California, Davis, since 1976 and has served as the chairman of the department of economics. He received his B.A. fromWesleyan University and his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Sheffrin is the author of 10 other books and monographs and over 100 articles in the fields of macroeconomics, public finance, and international economics. His most recent books include "Rational Expectations" (second edition) and "Property Taxes and Tax Revolts: The Legacy of Proposition 13" (with Arthur O'Sullivan and Terri Sexton). Professor Sheffrin has taught macroeconomics at all levels, from large introduction to principles classes (enrollments of 400) to graduate classes for doctoral students. He is the recipient of the Thomas Mayer Distinguished Teaching Award in economics. He lives with his wife Anjali (also an economist) in Davis, California, and has two daughters who have studied economics. In addition to a passion for current affairs and travel, he plays a tough game of tennis. Stephen Perez is chair of the economics department at California State University, Sacramento. After receiving his B.A. in economics at the University of California, San Diego, he received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Davis, in 1994. He taught economics at Virginia Commonwealth University and Washington State University before coming to California State University, Sacramento, in 2001. He teaches macroeconomics at all levels as well as econometrics, sports economics, labor economics, and mathematics for economists.
Professor Perez's research explores most macroeconomic topics. In particular, he is interested in evaluating the ability of econometric techniques to discover the truth, issues of causality in macroeconomics, and sports economics. His articles haveappeared in many economics journals, including the "Journal of Monetary Economics," "Econometrics Journal," "Economics Letters," "Journal of Economic Methodology," "Public Finance and Management," "Journal of Economics and Business," "Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics," "Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Applied Economics," and "Journal of Macroeconomics."

Wow... just wow

Let me just add the disclaimer that I'm not a vegetarian, or a vegan for that matter. However growing up my mother was a vegetarian for a long time simply because she disliked the taste of meat. When she would include meat in our meals it was merely as a side dish for the fruits and veggies, never the centerpiece. Since I've started working out and eating right following Mike's other books(which I also highly recommend) I've added a lot of meat back into my diet. I enjoy it, but I've really been missing that plant based goodness. This book brings that to me in a fun, easy, and delicious way. I've only tried a few recipes so far but the "Cookie Dough" Oatmeal Cereal alone is worth the price of this book. I thought I had to forgo green on my plate to get enough protein, but the recipes in this book are packed with it. Bottom line, if you want good healthy vegetarian or vegan food to build the body of your dreams or just because you love the deliciousness, get this book.

Just what I needed

This is an excellent resource. I'm not a vegetarian per se, but I am trying to put on mass and I want to do it in a healthy manner. I should also mention that I have virtually no cooking experience but this book walks you through every step. Plus this book makes counting calories and macronutrients very simple because every meal has it all laid out for you. Highly recommended.

Simple but tasty recipes; good for omnivores, too!

I handle most of the cooking in my family, but my wife is now helping because she's gone back to being vegetarian. This book is FANTASTIC for people who are relatively new to cooking because it's not overwhelming; the ingredients are available in regular grocery stores and the recipes are easy to follow. For those of us who cook regularly, the recipes are also easy to modify if you want to get a bit more complex. I'm an omnivore and have found the recipes in this book to be both tasty and satisfying. We've cooked about half of the recipes so far and have some favorites on weekly rotation.

Wisdom of the Ages

The Zohar is unlike other books. It's meaning cannot be penetrated by merely reading it. And yet it contains all the wisdom and glory of Creation. In our present time we are most fortunate to have Rav Michael Laitman open the mystery of how to use this book. He is doing so with live lessons on the internet. By itself the Zohar is at best a curiosity. But combine this book with a teacher who truly understands it and then the Zohar is Life itself.

Making the wisdom of Kabbalah accessible to everyone, August 6, 2009

This book is a must for any serious student of Kabbalah interested in delving into the mysteries of the ancient Kabbalistic volumes of The Book of Zohar. The Book of Zohar was written by Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai in the second century CE. In the 1930s-40s, Rabbi Yehuda Ashlag wrote an extensive commentary on The Book of Zohar called HaSulam (The Ladder) and suddenly the wisdom of Kabbalah contained in The Book of Zohar became more accessible to us.

Michael Laitman, in The Zohar, has taken the Ashlag commentary and provided us with an in-depth understanding of the first "book" in The Book of Zohar with 'The Introduction of the Book of Zohar.'

This seminal Kabbalistic text is written in a form of "code" and is difficult to understand without assistance from a Kabbalist. Laitman explains in current English the various terms, names, titles, and abbreviations that appear throughout The Book of Zohar. He then provides an English translation from the original Aramaic to each paragraph followed by a blending of Ashlag's commentary on the text and his own detailed explanations before moving on to the next paragraph.

The Zohar is an incredible gift to humanity at this point in our collective evolution and Laitman has opened the doors wide for us to access the wisdom of Kabbalah. Laitman provides us with clear understandings of concepts occurring throughout The Book of Zohar, such as Partzufim, Sefirot, Worlds, perceived Lights, concealment, revelation, Kelim, reception, bestowal and many more.

The Zohar is a book to be savored slowly, each taste of it deepening the desire for more. This book is an essential addition to the library of any serious student of Kabbalah.

A valuable book for any transport researcher

This book provides a thorough analysis in all facets of airport operations and provides the reader with a logistical insight that is unmatched. While the book provides a great overview, it lacks information particularly on air cargo development and facility planning at airports. While the growth in air cargo traffic significantly outpaces passenger growth, air cargo development issues at airports become more significant. Air cargo development issues must be addressed by airport authorities. This book only makes scant reference to this. However, "Airport Operations" is a valuable book to all airport authorities, consultants and transport researchers. No doubt, a very timely piece of information.

This is a great source of information and very clear definitions of many of the key issues relating to Airport Management and Operations. Although written primarily from the European and Asia Pacific Airport and Airline perspectives, the author has worked very hard to include North American issues and examples. As The Airport Industry moves continually towards privatization, these differences will move to the background and be less obvious; and less important. This is a great starting place for the researcher or the occasional affectionato

For millennia humans relied on mythical or biblical accounts to conjure up a birth date for our planet. Astronomer Edmund Halley used the amount of salt in the oceans as his calendar. The great Newton ventured at writing a chronology that took most of the stories of Greek kings and heroes at face value. But as French geophysicist Richet tells readers, people didn't get serious about ascertaining the age of the Earth until the Enlightenment, when researchers tried to figure the amount of heat lost by the Earth to reckon backward to its molten youth. But a firm date—4.5 billion years—couldn't be established until the discovery of radioactive elements to date everything from textiles to stones. Richet writes in a meandering European style as he draws in figures from other fields (who would have guessed that Voltaire was Newton's principal advocate on the Continent?) to fill out his story. His writing occasionally plods along, and attempts at humor sometimes fall flat, although these may be just hazards of translation. Stretching the clock

These days nearly anybody can cite the idea of relativity with the Einsteinian comparison of our perception of time if we're sitting on a hot stove or next to a pretty girl. It took many centuries and controversies before a realistic view of time was developed. The theories and research, as Richet presents it, were long confined to the Mediterranean and European nations. He simply passes over time-keepers in Asia or the Western Hemisphere to launch his discussion with the Book of Genesis. From there he takes us on an encyclopaedic tour of Western European science and how its findings led to a more precise determination of the age of our planet. The original title [in French], was "The Age of the Earth: Toward the Discovery of the Immensity of Time." A far more accurate label for this work.

Considerations of time began as philosophical questions. The obvious passage of time, days, "moonths" and seasons were practical matters, but were clearly cyclical. Even advanced cultures, such as Pharaonic Egypt, restarted the calendar with each new ruler. Linear time, Richet notes, was a significant break with past thinking about time. Significantly, the concept postulated an identifiable beginning - first of time, then of the Earth itself. From what he calls the "Mosaic Chronology", the new idea became the focus of a search for the age of our planet. But a novel concept didn't provide new ways of measuring time for many centuries.

One teasing bit of evidence, known even by the ancients, were fossils. Seashells found in rocks high in mountains were an enigma. It was a long time before they were accepted as something once organic instead of simply anomalous stones. The very means of forming rocks was debated. Volcanoes were a manifest means, but later, the possibility of river or shoreline sediments hardening was debated. It was clear that layered rocks were likely former silt, but how long did the process take, and why were some strata folded over? One French diplomat in Egypt studied erosion and sediment and proposed the Earth was over two billion years old! Contrasted with the Biblical assumption that declared the planet to be only a few thousand years in age, this declaration was quickly dismissed by scholars. Later, as physics and chemistry improved as disciplines, did a new age in the millions become more readily accepted.

In this debate, Richert singles out a Victorian Englishman as the pivotal figure. William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, emerged as the "voice of authority" in dating the Earth. In one of his more famous pronouncements he dismissed Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection with an assessment of the sun's age at no more than 10 million years. Although new calculations brought some revision, Kelvin sustained his viewpoint for decades. Physics, however, was on the verge of new discoveries. Richert recounts the discovery of radioactivity and the elements that produce it. The idea that a rock might "decay" astounded scientists and the public alike. Further work demonstrated that the sun used a different process to generate heat - it wasn't just a cooling gas ball. Links were made with radioactive rocks in the Earth's crust and what was transpiring in the centre. Suddenly, the age of the planet increased many-fold. In 1965, a researcher still rarely noted, Claire Patterson, was able to date the Earth at over 4.5 billion years in age. In a glaring omission, Richert fails to note that this date was later confirmed by rocks returned from the Moon.

There are other omissions Richert might have included. Alfred Wegener's insight leading to a theory of continental drift, while not providing a dating scheme, demonstrated a process requiring many aeons to achieve. The Earth's magnetic field, which unaccountably flips the North and South magnetic poles, contributed to the concept of an ancient Earth. Perhaps these may be considered small lapses in such a detailed study. In supporting his epic, Richert uses the page reference for footnoting, but adds suggestions for further reading at the end. He also adds an interesting innovation in listing works about the major figures in his account. More authors should take note of this technique. Although Richert's prose is a bit dense, the wealth of information in this book brings the reader many rewards. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
