Avinash Dixit is Emeritus John J.F. Sherrerd University Professor of Economics at Princeton University, where he offered his popular freshman course in game theory. Dixit makes mathematical microeconomics understandable.

I used this book while taking a class with Professor Dixit at Princeton University. Unlike most economists, Dixit is a clear, comprehensible, and engaging author. Although the subject of the book sounds dry, Dixit shows not only how math can be applied to economics, but why it _must_ be. Dixit is a great economist and an even greater educator.

Highly recommended for those that really want to understand economics.

- Value functions
- Convex sets
- Maximum Theorem

It's a quick read, but well worth your time.

elegant small book on economic theory

This book is a gem. Very clear exposition of the lagrange method and multipliers, and other optimization methods. Dixit finds economic intuition in every step of the math. I pick up this book anytime I need to remind myself how the mind of a clear economic thinker works. No personal economics library could be complete without it.

A solid starter book. If you know how to program already, this will not help you as much.

If you've never programmed before, you have access to the MATLAB computing environment, and you are willing to really work and tinker at programming, this is an excellent book. It starts you from the very first lesson and walks you through the beginnings of MATLAB. I'm biased, as I took the course as Dr. Rosenbaum taught it many years ago, but I'm thoroughly confident that his course and this book are the reason I have a job today. Keep in mind that you're not going to learn everything you need from this book. In fact, the main thing you'll learn are how to ask the right questions of your preferred search engine or online forum! As we might expect, though, from the literature on problem-solving, sometimes being able to define and mentally represent the problem itself is one of the biggest steps in solving the problem. That's what this book gets you -- a way to define and mentally represent the problems you'll be trying to solve as a programmer.

MATLAB is a powerful tool for any scientist, and provided you will have access to the MATLAB computing environment, you will be well-served to familiarize yourself with MATLAB. That way when you find yourself thinking, "I don't want to manually tabulate this column" or "if only there were a way to do these data transformation tasks automatically and quickly without involving a spreadsheet program..." -- you'll have another tool in your toolkit!

Now, just a quick rundown of who this book is for: if you already know how to program, you might find this book a little irritatingly basic, or you might find that it doesn't tell you the differences between MATLAB and other languages (at least, not in a way that helps you much). When Rosenbaum says that this is for "Behavioral Scientists," it's sort of a shorthand to refer to total or near-total novices in programming, and the examples you'll see are generally psychology-oriented so that might help the novice from the behavioral sciences to better grasp the lessons.

If you're in grad school for psych or another experimental behavioral science, you should learn MATLAB -- this book might help.

About the Author
Rollan McCleary is of Irish and Australian nationalities, a doctor of religious studies from Queensland University published in mainly religion though he has also produced drama and poetry. His "The Expansion of God" in 1982 on the relations between Christianity and Asian cultures was a critical success and his "A Special Illumination: Authority, Inspiration and Heresy in Gay Spirituality" (2005) caused some controversy internationally. His recent "Reflections of an Only Child:A Memoir" (2014) includes concerning his long quest of the Magian wisdom on which has written two books ("Signs for a Messiah" and "Testament of the Magi") and his experiences of life in both East and West that has influenced his thought including creatively in poetry (most recent volume "Raphael and Lucifer and Other Visionary Poems" (2016).

A thousand years from now, historians will probably look back on the fragmentary pastiche that constitutes present-day science and marvel at our prejudice and primitive methods of research. It's to be hoped that they don't despise it as we have done with the knowledge of ages past.

The science of any age ultimately rests - though no doubt some theoreticians would argue this point - on a purely pragmatic base. Does the technology work? Does the theory accurately describe real-world observations?

And, from the point of view of a religious individual whose concern is with matters of the spirit: what does any set of empirically-tested facts tell us about God?

In every age, regardless of the level of its knowledge about the universe, God's divine nature and His invisible qualities and power should still be manifest. Not, of course, in the same way in each age since the science of any era deeply influences the cultural perception of that era. But it should be evident nonetheless.

In this uniquely different book, McCleary turns the spotlight on an ancient `science' and follows in the footsteps of the magi. Mathematicians, astronomers and astrologers, based originally in Persia, these were the scientists and scholars of their day. Using the `science' of the first century - astrology - McCleary peers deeply into the `message of the stars' to see what gentile scholars of that age could have known about Christ and His coming.

First pinpointing a likely day and year for the birth of Christ, he then uses more recent techniques involving asteroid positions. Assuming that the naming of asteroids (which has occurred in modern times) in neither random nor coincidental but meaningful and Spirit-inspired, he examines the positions of 440 of them at the time he proposes Christ was born.

As a result he unveils a staggering level of concord with the life of Christ. I cannot comment on any aspect of the astrological analysis. However, assuming that it is fundamentally correct, then the odds of finding such an impressively appropriate set of names, so uncannily echoing the life of Christ as it is portrayed in the Gospels, is indeed astronomical.

I find no problem believing that the modern naming of asteroids partakes of the wider process of Naming which, throughout the Scriptures, was a prophetic act. However, others of a more rationalistic bent might well take exception. Without any way of verifying McCleary's raw data or knowing enough to follow his analysis, the deepest impression left by the book is his monumental survey of the asteroids and what meaning could have been taken from their position at the time of the birth of Christ. With a few controversial exceptions, his reading of what is in the stars is surprisingly orthodox. Virgin birth, resurrection on the third day, ascension into heaven, coming of the Spirit in fire. This is not to say I agree with every one of his interpretations but there is certainly food for thought in it all.

TESTAMENT OF THE MAGI is an extremely unusual and thought-provoking book which convinces me that, in every age--even our own--God speaks through the book of creation as well as the book of His Word. Regardless of the flaws of science or astrology, or our perceptions or views about them, there is always enough to point out the truth about God in them and to leave us, as Paul says in Romans 1:20, `without excuse.'

About the Author
Stephan Bugaj started screenwriting professionally at Pixar Animation Studios, having transitioned from a decade of working as a technical artist to co-creating two development projects. He subsequently left the studio to head-up all writing and directing for Telltale Games, and co-write the first episode of Tales From the Borderlands and co-direct the first episode of Game of Thrones. He then left that studio to head to Los Angeles where he works as VP of Creative for Hanson Robotics and as a film, games and virtual reality writer-director working with WakingUp Media, Visioneer Studios, Marza Animation Planet, Digital Quilt, Limitless VR, Penny Pop, Pocket Gems, and others. Justin Sloan is a video game writer at Telltale Games, where he has worked on such titles as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. His novels include such titles as Falls of Redemption and Back by Sunrise, and he dabbles in screenwriting. Justin studied writing at the Johns Hopkins MA in Writing program and screenwriting at UCLA. Before becoming an author, Justin served in the Marines and has lived in Japan, Korea, and Italy. Great book! This reminds me of one my all-time fav screenwriting books "The 101 Habits of Highly Successful Screenwriters." Except, this time, the author can cite his own experiences writing in the video game world, getting published, & getting optioned. There is nothing better than reading interviews and hearing advice from successful writers to get one inspired, organized, and on the right track! Especially in this modern environment, "writers" need to know how to cross-publish, create content, get it out there, and write across platforms. Highly recommended.

You'll get hard-line, practical advice from real industry experts, demonstrating exactly how lucrative—financially and spiritually—a creative writing career can be. Learn from real pros, who are doing this work daily and succeeding at it. And rather than canned and panned advice from would-bes, you can learn from people who have actually done this work, and who love it and know what it can be.

I highly recommend this volume, and it's predecessor, to anyone even considering a writing career. It's the advice I wish I'd gotten early on, and it's filled with gems that can help new and seasons writers alike.

Gr 10 Up—Lone Sloane finds himself, as the title suggests, adrift in solitude after his spacecraft explodes. Where most people would surely have perished, Sloane survives, managing to evade the all-consuming black hole that has seemingly erased any vestiges of his craft. In its place a stone throne emerges, thus beginning the very trippy voyages of the title character. Druillet's oversize picture book is a psychedelic fantasy reminiscent of the "Bronze Age" of comics (1970–85). His use of worm's-eye perspective, warm colors, monochromatic patterns, and various shades of gray, black, and white capture Sloane's alternating position as the "hunted" and the "one touched by the King of Gods." Readers may find themselves confused by the bizarre surrealism of the illustrations, which occasionally might cause them to lose the story's focus. There isn't much revealed about the protagonist and how he came to be regarded as the sought after "living one," nor why he is a "loner" among his kin. Perhaps the answer to these questions and more will be found during subsequent voyages. The reproductions of drawings are of poor quality, and there are some questionable changes to font- not what I was looking for.

The following comments are specific to this latest 2015 re-print of the Lone Sloane. I gave this re-print two stars, because it fails to do Druillet drawings justice:

-1) When compared to the original 1973 printing, ALL the lines and edges in ALL of the pictures are blurry soft, and lacking in sharpness, as if made from slightly out-of-focus low-resolution scans.

-2) Even more disturbingly, the colors are lifeless and dull, less saturated and not as vibrant as they ought to be. The hue is frequently off, as with the page 32, for example, where you get a muddy purple-grey instead of deep dark blue found in the original printing...

These are serious issues for a comic meant to be admired primarily on it's graphic strength. It is like trying to listen to a well-regarded musical performance through a grainy low-resolution MP3 file: the enjoyment is just not there, and the whole point of re-issuing this book becomes questionable, as something essential- the intensely psychedelic atmosphere that was the prime attraction of this otherwise peculiar and strange graphic story has been lost!

The motive for this re-issue is plain and clear, as one cannot help but notice the rather obvious attempt to milk consumers for what it's worth: this new book contains only half of the original book, which is now split and will be published as two separate volumes.

Finally, and rather mysteriously, the font in all of the original text bubbles was changed- Gone is the harder to read but very characterful writing. Instead, you got a generic comics font. Unfortunately, even the famed double-spreads weren't spared. I thought their strange gothic font was an integral part of those pictures - But alas! It is an unfortunate change that is hard to rationalize- go figure what was the motive behind it?

Have I mentioned that the glossy paper is less appropriate than the original semi-gloss, as it produces veiling reflections that complicate viewing the already de-saturated pictures even further.

Overall, the new book is not what I was hoping for, and a very poor monetary value to boot, so I returned it.
Instead of this reprint, and for the similar princely sum of $20, I managed to get the original 1973 printing which is both more complete (twice as thick) and graphically superior in each and every way: better quality print, better paper, better colors, better fonts.

PS - A word about the original Druillet story: a true classic head-trip a-la Barbarella, but very different in visual style: the story is a bit crazed, but inventive, and extremely unusual in it's structure, even by the standard of the 1970's drug-induced visions like Barbarella:
"Lone Sloan" flips the conventional story-telling on it's head by starting off as fantasy, and becoming hard sci-fi. This is in opposition to almost every conventional storyline of the genre, exemplified by Jodorowski and Moebius Incal, and plethora of modern Marvel stories that start off sci-fi and become more fantasy, as powers, enlightenment and magic gets introduced.
Every visually-inclined person would do well to at least flip through Druillet drawings once.
For a comic-book connoisseur, this is a classic on par with the famed "Incal" and "Blueberry", and, thus, indispensable.
But do avoid this 2015 reissue! Hope this helps.

Beware, this has previously been published in English

The art and story is fantastic. However, I already had the Dragon's Dream edition, and didn't realize that this was the same book. (strictly speaking it's only 1/2 the same book, as the Dragon's Dream is twice as long). So if you already have an older copy don't buy this one.

Revering to the review with the complaint about the printing quality, my copy is crisp. Even under my magnifying glass it looks crisp. I have a lot of comic books with worse printing quality and I am very angry about it but this one is satisfying. Beside the overwhelming details, this comic book impresses with breathtaking pictorial composition. Druillet created with Lone Sloane an outstanding masterpiece. No one can call himself a comic geek without having this standalone milestone. Lone Sloane is gothic, psychedelic science fiction. Since 1972, the year Lone Sloane was first published, no other artist came close to the outrageous and mind-blowing drawings in this comic book. I have many comic books drawn by ingenious Artists but Druillet is a class of its one.
This new oversized edition is like a dream come true. Before, I just had an over 40 years old copy in Italian on cheap paper and too dark printed.
The 6 voyages of Lone Sloane is the king of must-haves. I want to be buried with this comic book.
