About the Author

Richard Peiser was appointed the first Michael D. Spear Professor of Real Estate Development in the department of urban planning and design at Harvard University. He is a former professor at the University of Southern California and the author of Reducing Crime Through Real Estate Development and Regenerating Older Suburbs. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. David Hamilton is a professor of real estate finance and development at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design and the chief operating officer of Geobarns. He lives in Middlebury, Vermont.

Outstanding review of the industry

This is an outstanding review of the real estate development industry. It is aimed slightly toward smaller and entrepreneurial developers, but there is lots of relevant information for anyone in the industry. It is comprehensive and walks you through everything. This 3rd Edition was released after the real estate crash and recession of 2008 and onwards, so the new capital market and lending realities are incorporated into the text. The 2nd Edition does not have that crucial update.

The amount and degree of detail this book goes into is marvelous. Super all encompassing, well written and edited. Just cannot recommend it enough. Totally worth it. Didn't expect anything going in, but surprised as a result

Don't waste your time

Really poor value! Covers a little bit of everything without revealing anything useful but heavily padded with fluff. After 10 minutes I found several factual inaccuracies and the graphics were very simplistic. For almost $200, I don't expect to be more of an authority on the topic than the author. Refunded it the day I got it.

Still the best book for the professional. Invaluable resource for architects, landscape architects and landscape lighting designers. Broad and deep with plenty of technical information. I purchased this book in 1992 and I bought it again today (an electrician friend "lost" my original copy). A second edition (if planned) should include better information about transformer regulation (the ability of a low voltage lighting transformer to maintain 12v under load) and voltage drop (the dreaded decrease in voltage through the main supply cable) which are presented as formulae rather than actual measurements. Great photographs mostly of large scale projects. This book should be in every outdoor lighting designer's library.

There is a second edition (Wiley 2005) of the book revised and updated by the author to reflect changes and improvements in techniques and equipment. The second edition is easily recognized by the illustrated four color cover; the original had an illustrated dust cover (missing from the last run of the first edition) by the cover itself was plain black.

I have both editions and consider them a bargain in terms of concentrated relevant information.

Landscape Lighting 101

The Landscape Lighting book, by Janet Moyer, provides both an academic and practical level of landscaping lighting knowledge. Another good book, if you can find it, is the Ortho's book of How to Design and Install Outdoor Lighting.

In comparison, the Ortho book has more colorful pictures and offers a very colorful education - I'd say, more or less at a good high school level. If you want more of college level introduction to landscape lighting - perhaps, to start a business or to broaden your knowledge, The Landscape Lighting book is the book for you.

The Art and Craft of Landscape Lighting

The second edition of Janet Lennox Moyer's THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is an absolute necessity for everybody who works in landscape lighting or who is seriously interested in creating their own garden lighting. Ms Moyer has greatly revised and expanded the color plates and Chapter 4, "The Design Process - Documenting and Installing Landscape Lighting" as well as writing an entirely new Chapter 5 "Follow-up Work - Record Documents and Project Maintenance." These changes and additions and the many other updates make the new edition well worth the purchase price.

First published in 1992, THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK has served as the single and indispensable reference for the landscape lighting industry. It has offered all new landscape lighting practitioners guidance and provided an emerging industry the foundation necessary on which to build solid practice. While there is a wealth of other books that offer how-to help and publish pretty pictures, none of them even attempt to define and explain professional practice for the landscape lighting industry with Ms Moyer's authority and confidence.

THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is not an easy book to read but it is well worth the effort. Once you understand the theory behind the short cuts and rules-of-thumb that other how to books offer, you are free to create your own. Fantastic first novel with terrific plotting, characters and writing-- this is a must read!

I was asked by the author to read and review this book. Boy, am I glad she sent me a copy! I wholeheartedly give this book a full five stars, no question.

Torched by Andrea Lynn Colt is a YA contemporary novel that I stayed up all night reading (in PDF on the computer no less, which I've NEVER done) because it was so riveting. The book stars Rose, a mean girl in her prime, head cheerleader extraordinaire, who seems to have the perfect life-- the perfect best friend, the perfect boyfriend, the perfect car-- you get the picture. Senior year seems like it is going to be the best ever. The only thing marring its perfection is her prank war with her boyfriend Ryan's best friend, Paxton. Then someone torches Ryan's family boat, and all clues point to Rose. Suddenly, her perfect life isn't so perfect anymore, and she struggles with herself to see the person she has truly become over the past few years as well as to find out who committed the crime and set her up.

I absolutely adored this book. The pacing was terrific, it was well written with a lot of style and wit. As you can tell from above, I devoured it from cover to cover, even though I still didn't have a comfortable reading format, which says a lot about the book. The characters were terrific, and Rose while not a pleasant character has redeemability, which is essential for the plot. Paxton smoulders in the background, and other characters end up delightfully three dimensional-- something I absolutely loved.

Overall, I was incredibly impressed with this first novel of Colt's and I'll be following her career closely from here on out. Everyone should read this book!

Incendiary & Intense

I positively adored this book. At first I was a little put off, since the main character Rose is a preppy cheerleader. Personally, I hated that type of girl in high school, and I thought it would disconnect me from the novel. I'm so glad that I was wrong, and that I gave this book a chance.

+Starting with the cover, this book has it going on. I love the design and the teal coloring, since it's my favorite color. It's what drew my attention in.

+Paxton. I. Love. Paxton. He has officially been added to the fictional boyfriend list on my blog. He may pretend to be cool with his quarterback status, but he's a little nerd at heart. I love my boys muscular, funny, and able to quote Spock. I know Rose is the lead, but Paxton was my favorite character within this book.

+The intensity in this book is through the roof. There are so many emotions happening at once that it's like an awful roller coaster ride of feels. I was furious when no one would believe her, heartbroken when her best friend shunned her, giddy and sexually frustrated on her behalf when she feels kisses get a little bit heated. Emotions are hard to perfect, but Torched accomplishes it.

+Honestly, I wasn't sure who did it. Normally, my problem with mysteries is that I catch on rather quickly and then find myself twiddling my thumb for the next 200 pages. Pleasantly enough, that wasn't the case for Torched. I changed my guess about half a dozen times in uncertainty, only to find out that it was one of my first guesses. It drove me crazy, not knowing, and that was my reason for flipping the pages of this novel so quickly.

This book is a sizzling, arson-y five stars. This book is perfectly balanced parts of mystery, romance, and humor. Andrea Lynn Colt tells a great, clean story with vivid imagery and strong, relatable characters (even though they are rich and on the coast and I am poor and in the midwest). I recommend this to YA fans, clean romance fans, mystery fans, and chick lit fans. There is mild language in this book, but it was so light that I don't think anyone would take offense to it. I can't believe that it's Andrea Lynn Colt's book, but I genuinely hope that it isn't the last.

Funny and Romantic!

Everything's going great for Rose Whitfield - she has a ton of friends in school, she's the head cheerleader, and she's dating the cutest guy in school.

But then everything changes one morning, when she wakes up to to police banging on her door! Apparently somebody's torched her boyfriend's parent's boat - and framed her for it! Now not only is she in trouble with the law, but her boyfriend no longer trusts her, and her best friend hates her!

And the worst part is Rose knows exactly who did it - her arch-nemesis, Paxton. The two have never gotten along, and have played pranks on each other years after year - except this one has gone too far.

I don't want to give any more of the plot away as I don't want to spoil the surprises - but I can say that this was an amazingly fun, well written, and romantic book! It has some great plot twists and the characters really develop over the course of the story.

Also, there's an extremely romantic ending - I have to admit, it even made me tear up a bit at the end (and I'm a guy!) :]

K. John Morrow, Jr., PhD, is President and CEO of Newport Biotechnology Consultants, and has worked in academia and in the private sector. Very helpful!

This book is great - the authors are down to earth but not dumbed down, they are knowledgeable and intelligent but not so collegiate that you can't identify with them. They do really well, I think, in helping the reader understand the selections of literature they've chosen and challenging you to think out of the box. They do a great job defining the terms used in the study of literature / writing as well.

Solid Textbook

I spent a couple of semesters a while back teaching as an adjunct instructor at a university, and this was the textbook chosen by the department for the course. At first glance, I was disappointed with it. I just looked small, without much to work with.

Once the semester began, however, I began to see how high quality this book was. The selections are appropriate and interesting for the students, and the additional material--the explanatory notes, the writing samples, the questions--are really clear for the students. This book helped me to teach the class. And once I realized how high quality everything in it was, I was also happy at its small size. This was an affordable and convenient choice for my students to use.

After teaching for a year at that university, I moved on to other positions that used other textbooks. Every semester, though, I've found myself pulling "A Little Literature" back out, making copies from my students from it and consulting it for what literary choices it used to teach particular concepts. So, it was an excellent textbook and has since been a useful resource to me for several years.

It's alright.

Almost everything in this book is available in the public domain. You can just google the story and you'll be able to read it from there. It was fairly inexpensive, which is always nice, but from a teachers perspective, its not a book I would request for my classroom. There are better lit books out there.
