An introduction to IR that makes you think!

Most introductory books dutifully cover the central tenets and major categories of their subject but in a dry and "I could continue reading or do something constructive like mow the grass" sort of way. Not this one! Charles Jones' "International Relations" reads like a highly-engrossing conversation with a brilliant, witty, and entertaining friend who happens to know a hell of a lot about IR. As such, it can be read profitably by both layman and well-trained IR scholar alike.

The writers referenced during the discussion come alive under Jones' pen. For example, they are introduced not simply as (Waltz, 1979) but rather as "Kenneth Waltz, probably the most influential single theorist in the USA in the past forty years" or "Hedley Bull, an Australian who taught at Oxford in the mid-twentieth century." The end of the book has 30 pages of references for further reading in the event that part of that lunchtime conversation grabs your attention and you wish to explore it in greater depth.

About the Author

Gabriele Morra is an Assistant Professor in the department of Physics at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. He has co-authored several research articles including Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems. His research interests revolve around geodynamics, tectonics and numerical modeling methods.

David A. Yuen is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences in University of Minnesota. He has been the lead author in several high impact journal articles including Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems. He has also authored an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on numerical modeling of geophysical and geological phenomena.

Scott King is the Professor in the department of Geophysics in Virginia Tech. He has published in leading geology journals including Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Geophysical Journal International, Geology and Nature Geoscience. His research focuses on the dynamics and evolution of the interior of the terrestrial planets.

Sang Mook Lee is an Associate Professor in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Chair of Marine Geophysics at Seoul National University in Korea. He is the Principle Investigator and Director at the Center for Quality of Life Technology, Ministry of Knowledge. His research focuses on oceanography, marine geology and geophysics, geodynamics and plate tectonics. He is a young scientist with an unfortunate field trip accident that paralyzed him at the age of 40 and so very few representative publications are known.

Seth Stein is the William Deering Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences in Northwestern University at Illinois. He has published 6 books in Geophysical Monograph Series and Geodynamics Series. He has over 100 research articles including the Geophysical Research Letters. His research focuses on plate tectonics, seismology, and space geodesy with special emphasis on investigating plate boundary processes and deformation within the lithosphere using a range of techniques including space-based geodesy, seismology, and marine geophysics.

Greg Richards lectures in leisure studies at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He is co-ordinator of the Association for Tourism and Leisure Education (ATLAS) and has led a number of EU projects in the fields of tourism education, cultural tourism, sustainable tourism, tourism employment, conference tourism and ICT in tourism. His main research interest is cultural tourism.

Anne-Mette Hjalager is an independent consultant and contract researcher based in the Science Park in Aarhus, Denmark. This is the first time I've actually taken the time to write out a review. I'm sure this book was awesome when it first came out, it is clear, concise and has a nice follow-along structure. However, it has become outdated and it is riddled with either old syntax and errors. I have gotten past most of that though. The worst part is probably that the files that are used in some of the examples are hosted on the authors blog and have been taken down. If he can't be bothered to continue hosting old files for people who may buy the book (or point us to somewhere to get them) we shouldn't be bothered to buy it.

Good - If you know what you're getting

Let me start with pointing out what this book does well:

- The book gives a good survey of common Machine Learning algorithms. It explains what kind of problems these algorithms are good for. That's perfect for someone who wants to get a quick overview and has no background in Machine Learning.
- The book is very easy to understand. The writing style is very casual. Even people without formal training in Computer Science should have no problem. The only thing that's required is basic programming knowledge, preferably in Python.
- Among all of the theoretical ML books out there it's refreshing to find a book that applies the algorithms to real-world problems.

Now the negative points. The following are not necessarily negatives for everyone, as it really depends on what you were looking for in this book. However, I was expecting a bit more, and was disappointed about the following:

- Half of the books is code. I just don't see the point in printing full listing of Python code. Why not give shorter pseudocode and make the Python code available on the website? The long code listings only obfuscate the ideas instead of demonstrating how to apply them. If you take away the code listings there are maybe 150 pages of "real" content left.
- The very casual and easy-to-understand style comes at a price. The book does not go into the mathematical details of any of the algorithms. I understand that this wasn't the books intention to begin with, but I would argue that some mathematical background is necessary in order to efficiently apply complex algorithms. If you want to apply the algorithms presented in the book to slightly different or more complex problems, or wish to understand the advantages/disadvantages of each of the algorithms you'll have to know the basic math behind them.
- The algorithms are very poorly implemented. Looking at some of the code makes me cringe. While the code in the book may work for "Building a search engine" for a few thousand pages, or optimizing problems with a handful of variables, it certainly won't work for more interesting problems that involve real-world data, which is orders of magnitude larger. And the real-world scale is where these algorithms actually become interesting. The code in this book will only work for small examples where efficiency play no role. I understand the author wanted to keep the code as simple as possible, but in my opinion a few notes about how algorithms can be made more efficient would have been necessary. I can see many people trying to apply these algorithms to their real-world data, and getting stuck because of the poor implementation.

Outdates, Code no longer works

I would not recommend anyone buying this book. The examples are outdated, based on sites that don't even exist anymore. The list of errata is huge (and doesn't even include all the errata I found).

Finally, the the author references old versions of python libraries that no longer 'work as advertised', or that have changed so radically that the example code will not even run - you'll be spending hours just figuring out how to update the code to be compatible with newer versions of the libraries referenced in the book. That in itself is a frustrating experience.

My advice is, get another book for Python or ML if that's what you're looking for and don't waste your time with this one.

About the Author

Tania Kotsos is a Greek South-African author and motivational speaker. She was born in Lourenço Marques (modern-day Maputo), Mozambique to Greek parents. At a very young age she moved with her family to Durban, South Africa where she spent her childhood and formative years. She obtained a degree in Economics (BCom Hons) at the University of KwaZulu Natal, and later enjoyed a successful 11-year career in investment banking as a Foreign Exchange Strategist in London, United Kingdom. She left the banking industry in 2007 to pursue her love for metaphysics and mind power, and in 2008 she created the website Mind Your Reality (www.mind-your-reality.com). She also delivers live Mental Mastery seminars both online and in person. She now lives between Athens, the island of Naxos in Greece, and London, UK.

My Life...Forever Changed!

This book is not for the informal reader. There are a lot of books of this nature out there today, “The Secret”, by Rhonda Byrne, “The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent”, by Ester Hicks, or classics such as “Think and Grow Rich”, by Nepoleon Hill or “The Three Magic Words”, by US Anderson. The Adventures of I is the science behind the principles outlined in those books. To me the author offers verification to those principles using a clear and concise explanation of quantum physics that truly inspires me. I don’t know who Tania Kotsos is, and I get the feeling if she follows the precepts in her own book she doesn’t care if the world ever knows who she is. This book is not pretentious or dogmatic; it doesn’t tell you how to be or what you should believe. Kotsos just tells it like it is, without, judgment, or code of belief, just the laws of the Universe, who we are, and how we may be active co-creators rather than passive victims of circumstances. It’s one thing to read books of this nature it’s another thing to understand and apply what you’re reading. This book has helped me have a clearer perspective on myself and my reality. It gives me a renewed hope and empowers me to take control of my life. Anyone who is truly searching for the secrets of the Universe may find you need not go any further than The Adventures of I A Journey to the Center of Your Reality. Fasten your seat belts! Thank you Tania Kotsos you have given me the greatest gift any human being can imagine. To the casual observer that may seem like a big statement…read the book and you’ll understand.

What a Wonderful Ride to my True Self!

Since I finished this book a few days ago, I have had to catch my breath. Because this book opened such a profound energy of love within me I was able to drop all that was not my real self and join with the love of the universe in which WE are all a part of and see how WE are creating our lives and the world through OUR beliefs and perceptions...that we are truly magnificently, infinitely, powerful beings of light and we are remembering our way back home through MIND.

As I have been practicing watching my thoughts, doing the star meditation, connecting to Universal Mind and other exercises, I am more sensitive to energies those of others and myself.

Because I now have the knowledge of how mind works within the universal laws I have entered into that part of my mind that is my God Self I am much more aware of the thoughts and emotions I am putting out into the field and now emit nothing unlike LOVE to continuously emit these energies out to the universe. I can dance between the the pendulum swings instead of getting knocked down by them. I keep and treasure all the hermetic principles as the blueprint for all souls to aspire to in their quest for Unity and Oneness while operating in the 3 D consciousness.

I want to thank Tania Kotsos for her unending generosity and love for the human condition for putting this labor of love into the world for all of us who are seeking to put it all together. It couldn't have come into existence at a better time!

I have been a seeker for most of my life. I am a Freemason. My reason for existing is only to search for light. I've traveled the paths of religion, spirituality, philosophy, and the like. Every road I have taken, every belief system I have studied, all of the thinkers I have researched, every book I have read, and every truth I have pondered, has led me to the Gnosis; the knowledge in this wonderful book.
How wonderfully amazing and glorious it is to be living at this point in history where the secrets of the universe are no longer hidden from the common folk and accessible only to the Elite. We all now have access to a knowledge that can not only transform our lives in unthinkable and marvelous ways, but revolutionize the Earth, and, dare I say, the Universe!
This is not hyperbole. This book is like no other. I've read hundreds of books and found pieces of the puzzle, but this book is the whole picture.
