On July 4th, 2014 the world lost CJ Henderson, an iconic author and all-around great guy. He lost his battle with cancer, but he did not go quietly and he will not be forgotten. His work is immortalized in over 70 novels and works of non-fiction, and at least as many collections, anthologies, and magazines.

In fact, new works by CJ Henderson will publish for years to come thanks to his heroic efforts to finish and find homes for those projects as-yet unpublished at the time of his illness, two of which are printed here.

CJ always did what he could to give other authors a boost. Encouraging them, mentoring them, sending opportunities their way. With that in mind those of us who called him friend feel there is no better tribute we can raise in his memory than an anthology filled with people he has helped over the years, writing stories inspired by CJ or his work.

The Society For The Preservation Of CJ Henderson brings together many of the best of the Tristate and Mid-Atlantic authors - not

Let me start by saying two things: it has been a long time since I reviewed a book and this is a hard one to re-start with.

Everyone I know in the Creative world of the Tristate area was effected by CJ, by his life and by his death. Even if that sounds pretentious it is the truth.

The Society For The Preservation Of CJ Henderson brings together many of the best of the Tristate and Mid-Atlantic authors - not all, our area includes NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore and DC including all would be crazy.

The stories in this anthology includes stories of high fantasy, sci-fi, urban fantasy and, of course, stories set in the world of HP Lovecraft’s Mythos.

I enjoyed every story, but at the same time even the happiest of the stories left me a little sad. Above all I got the feeling he would have loved the work.

If you knew CJ, even tangentially, you will see him in this anthology. If you didn’t know CJ, you will by the end of the book.
I would love to see this anthology have a sequel – and isn’t that the highest praise you can give?

I met CJ Henderson many times... one of the best Authors with his work in person I've ever seen! He was a great salesmen and a great all around guy! His works are excellent as well and if you're a fan of the horror Mythos genre then check out his works!

A celebration of a great writer!

CJ Henderson was a writer's writer. He could fluidly move between genres. His noir was the noirest and his sci fi was the sciffiest. Those who met him, bought his books because he was a great writer and an even better salesman.

This anthology was put together to aid his estate after he came to a tragic end. In some places the haste really shows, but in ever story his talent shows even more.

The book gives one set of plans without much discussion on how to modify them. I was hoping for more theory and explaination about size, height, chimney placement etc.
In British fashion, the author uses more words than necessary to explain himself (think Dickens).
Overall, not a complete waste of time, but less helpful than the title would lead you to believe.

About the Author
Dudley Andrew is the founder of the Institute for Cinema and Culture at the University of Iowa. He is the author of Major Film Theories (1976) and Mists of Regret: Culture and Sensibility in Classic French Film (1995). Carole Cavanaugh is Associate Professor of Japanese at Middlebury College. She has published widely on Japanese literature and film.

BFI Rarely Disappoints

I follwed the film up by reading Dudely Andrew and Carole Cavanaugh's BFI Film Classic book Sansho Dayu. This informative book discusses the making of the film and the differences between Mizoguchi's film and Mori Ogai's original version. One of the interesting changes Mizoguch made was changing the Jizo statue (protector of children), from Ogai's version with a kannon statue (Bodhisattva of compassion) in the film. Mizoguch also changes several other details like the ages of the children and the reasons for their father's exile. The authors also note that Mizgichi was competitive with Kurosawa and notes the similarities between this film and Rashomon in that both films are adaptations from Taisho period writers who based their stories on Heian periods for the plots, both contain flashbacks, and focus on the general plight and moral condition of human beings. It is a good supplement to the film.

A short introduction to Kenji Mizoguchi's cinematic masterpiece Sansho Dayu, one of the very greatest films ever made. Contains two essays offering two different perspectives and evaluations. Carole Cavanaugh compares and contrasts the film with its literary sources and lauds Mizoguchi's version as a profoundly beautiful vision of indissoluble family ties and a trenchant critique of the Confucian militarism implicit in some earlier versions of the story. Dudley Andrew examines the socio-political aspects of the film's creation & international reception and criticizes what he perceives as Mizoguchi's bleak existentialist vision, quietism, and "inhuman humanism". Each essay contains much useful information and many interesting insights. The prose is clear but a bit stiff and academic.

About the Author
W. Phillip Keller, born in East Africa, always loved wildlife and the outdoors. "The Lord Is My Shepherd"

The Lord! But who is the Lord? What is His character? Does He have adequate credentials to be my Shepherd—my manager—my owner?

And if He does—how do I come under His control? In what way do I become the object of His concern and diligent care?

These are penetrating, searching questions, and they deserve honest and basic examination.

One of the calamities of Christianity is our tendency to talk in ambiguous generalities.

David, the author of the poem, himself a shepherd and the son of a shepherd, later to be known as the "Shepherd King" of Israel, stated explicitly, "The Lord is my Shepherd." To whom did he refer?

He referred to Jehovah, the Lord God of Israel.

His statement was confirmed by Jesus the Christ. When He was God incarnate amongst men, He declared emphatically, "I am the good Shepherd."

But who was this Christ?

Our view of Him is often too small—too cramped—too provincial—too human. And because it is, we feel unwilling to allow Him to have authority or control—much less outright ownership of our lives.

He it was who was directly responsible for the creation of all things both natural and supernatural (see Colossians 1:15–20).

If we pause to reflect on the person of Christ—on His power and His achievements—suddenly like David we will be glad to state proudly, "The Lord—He is my Shepherd!"

But before we do this it helps to hold clearly in mind the particular part played upon our history by God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

God the Father is God the author—the originator of all that exists. It was in His mind, first, that all took shape.

God the Son, our Saviour, is God the artisan—the artist, the Creator of all that exists. He brought into being all that had been originally formulated in His Father’s mind.

God the Holy Spirit is God the agent who presents these facts to both my mind and my spiritual understanding so that they become both real and relative to me as an individual.

Now the beautiful relationships given to us repeatedly in Scripture between God and man are those of a father to his children and a shepherd to his sheep. These concepts were first conceived in the mind of God our Father. They were made possible and practical through the work of Christ. They are confirmed and made real in me through the agency of the gracious Holy Spirit.

So when the simple—though sublime—statement is made by a man or woman that "The Lord is my Shepherd," it immediately implies a profound yet practical working relationship between a human being and his Maker.

It links a lump of common clay to divine destiny—it means a mere mortal becomes the cherished object of divine diligence.

This thought alone should stir my spirit, quicken my own sense of awareness, and lend enormous dignity to myself as an individual. To think that God in Christ is deeply concerned about me as a particular person immediately gives great purpose and enormous meaning to my short sojourn upon this planet.

And the greater, the wider, the more majestic my concept is of the Christ—the more vital will be my relationship to Him. Obviously, David, in this Psalm, is speaking not as the shepherd, though he was one, but as a sheep; one of the flock. He spoke with a strong sense of pride and devotion and admiration. It was as though he literally boasted aloud, "Look at who my shepherd is—my owner—my manager!" The Lord is!

After all, he knew from firsthand experience that the lot in life of any particular sheep depended on the type of man who owned it. Some men were gentle, kind, intelligent, brave, and selfless in their devotion to their stock. Under one man sheep would struggle, starve, and suffer endless hardship. In another’s care they would flourish and thrive contentedly.

So if the Lord is my Shepherd I should know something of His character and understand something of His ability.

To meditate on this I frequently go out at night to walk alone under the stars and remind myself of His majesty and might. Looking up at the star-studded sky I remember that at least 250,000,000 x 250,000,000 such bodies—each larger than our sun, one of the smallest of the stars—have been scattered across the vast spaces of the universe by His hand. I recall that the planet earth, which is my temporary home for a few short years, is so minute a speck of matter in space that if it were possible to transport our most powerful telescope to our nearest neighbor star, Alpha Centauri, and look back this way, the earth could not be seen, even with the aid of that powerful instrument.

All this is a bit humbling. It drains the "ego" from a man and puts things in proper perspective. It makes me see myself as a mere mite of material in an enormous universe. Yet the staggering fact remains that Christ, the Creator of such an enormous universe of overwhelming magnitude, deigns to call Himself my Shepherd and invites me to consider myself His sheep—His special object of affection and attention. Who better could care for me?

By the same sort of process I stoop down and pick up a handful of soil from the backyard or roadside. Placing it under an electron microscope I am astounded to discover it teems with billions upon billions of micro-organisms. Many of them are so complex in their own peculiar cellular structure that even a fraction of their functions in the earth are not yet properly understood.

Yes, He the Christ—the Son of God —brought all of this into being. From the most gigantic galaxy to the most minute microbe, all function flawlessly in accordance with definite laws of order and unity which are utterly beyond the mind of finite man to master.

I read this book many years ago. I read this book again with nine other guys and personally got so much more out of it. Just hearing their perspectives that were different than mine was awesome. I do recommend it for a solo read and HIGHLY recommend it for a group read. We took one month to read it and began discussing it weekly thereafter. We concluded our group discussion in four weeks. It was nice having that four week period to read the book. Busy men enjoyed the adventure.

This clearly written and helpful guide to a deeper understanding of the 23rd Psalm is truly a gift for those desiring a strengthened understanding of our Shepherd and His caring for us. I have shared this with other Christians who are wanting to move closer to Him in understanding and appreciation of the Word and His truths for us. To a one, they sigh with a peace now that its tender and reassuring message is so well explained to those of us not shepherds.

Amazing for both a new Christian or someone walking with the Lord for decades

Such an insightful perspective on the most popular Psalm. It's a clear explanation of the Lord's role as our great Shepherd and our role as beloved sheep. I just finished reading it with a college student I am discipling. Both of us have learned a great deal, so it is a great book for anyone no matter how long they've been walking with the Lord.

In recent years, the conservation of tropical forests has received worldwide publicity whereas effective forest management, particularly for timber extraction, has attracted little attention and gained some notoriety. The overall aim of the present paper was to examine how environmental micro-variation in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve of Belize can influence species distribution and thereby inform management strategy. The paper deals first with the background to forest management in Belize, then considers the methodology used in the present study and fin~~ly assesses the preliminary results. The specific objectives are: (1) to assess the effects of changing scale on the variability of selected individual soil properties in forest plots within the same vegetation class; and (2) to examine the variation in soil properties and tree species distribution, and to integrate environmental and ecological data over a range of scales. BACKGROUND Whereas the global and regional distribution of tropical forests is broadly governed by climatic and altitudinal variation, individual forest tracts need to consider a range of other, locally important factors to explain species distribution and change. With very high species diversity, tropical forests present a major challenge in the attempt to unravel controlling factors in distribution and growth (Swaine et aI. 1987). Research that attempts to explain diversity has looked at species distribution according to a range of factors, with a general recognition that soil fertility plays a significant if ill­ defined role (Swaine 1996).
