sweet and sexy enemies to lovers romance!

This is the first novella in Noelle Adams new Eden Manor series, a spin off from her Beaufort Brides series, which ended with Kelly and Peter's story Accidental Bride (an oops - best friends accidentally get married in Vegas! romance). At the end of that story Kelly and Peter had bought a mansion, Eden Manor, and were working at restoring it to its former glory to make it into a successful bed and breakfast retreat. That sets the stage for this story, in which Vanessa, whose husband passed away a few years ago, is struggling to continue the renovation business he started. She's got a plum job working on the mansion, but so does one of her rivals, Joe. When she was first widowed, Joe showed an interest in Vanessa, but she quickly came to realize that what he really wanted was for her to sell him the business, resulting in a messy breakup, and a continued rivalry. To her annoyance though, she still feels a flare of attraction whenever Joe is in the vicinity, and he still gets under her skin. Joe and her have fallen into the habit of trying to one-up the other, something Joe has always taken as the 'game' that they play (a way to not openly acknowledge that there is something still between them). But for Vanessa, it's serious - her livelihood is in jeopardy and it's not a game to her. Stuck working together on the mansion renovations, can Joe convince Vanessa that he's truly sorry for what happened in the past and get her to give him a second chance?

I really enjoyed this story! Vanessa struck me as a woman with high expectations of herself, and the character flaw (familiar to many) of being reluctant to ask for help. She's put a lot of pressure on herself to continue her deceased husband's business, not really taking into account how much of herself she's been pouring into it and how that has affected her. Her relationship with Joe is fraught with tension, after discovering his deceit three years earlier. Being attracted to him definitely doesn't help!

Joe comes across as a confident, hard working man. Yes, he made a mistake, by initially dating Vanessa and thinking that she'd be happy to sell him her inherited business. They are both in the same line of work, competing for the same jobs and the services of special contractors, and his idea was partially born out of the egotistical masculine intention that she wouldn't be able to handle the business on her own. But a funny thing happened, and he found himself falling for her. Too late though, as Vanessa discovered his real intentions and wouldn't listen to any apology at that time. it's been a rivalry that Joe has really wanted to put behind them, but that Vanessa has been determined to continue, all the while fighting her attraction to him. Joe came across as sincerely apologetic, willing Vanessa to forgive him his mistakes and to see that she is more important to him than any company. As they work together, the chemistry between them leads to some steamy scenes, and a cautious but workable friendship. It's going to take a lot of work for Joe to repair the damage he caused, but he shows time and again that he's willing to put in the effort. I loved how the story progressed, the struggle to forgive and the eventual happy ending for the couple. I found it quite emotional at times, sympathizing with Vanessa and even found myself shedding some tears ( a sign to me that the author has succeeded in pulling me into the story). It was a surprisingly sexy and ultimately satisfying enemies to lovers romance. 4.5 stars.

Ugh! Not again.

Fool me once...
It really is too bad. The first book I read by the this author (Substitute Bride) was so good.
However, this is the second book in a row that (Hired Bride being the last) where the MC is spineless and without any sort of pride or conviction. The second book in a row by this author that I will not finish (28% is as far as I can get).
Vanessa goes from despising and mistrusting her rival to making out with him on the same page. If it was after some sort of conclusion to the reasons she mistrusts him, fine, but the author makes no attempt at a reconciliation before the MC caves in. I hope my daughters have more self-respect than yet another one of the author's MCs.
It's not romantic. It's embarrassing.

Brilliant start to the Eden Manor series!

My Thoughts (full review):

Noelle Adams always has the loveliest stories. Unlike the majority, I adore novellas. They're short and sweet and when an author does them right, they are perfection. The first book in the Beaufort Brides spinoff series has hooked me yet again.

Here we have Vanessa who lost her husband 3 years ago. She hasn't moved on because of underlying guilt. Then there's Joe, the one guy who always gets in her way and under her skin, and not in a good way. They're stuck together for the time being, so they have to learn to work together and deal with each other. It doesn't take long for the desire to come forth and create all sorts of challenges.

One Week with her Rival was a brilliant start to the Eden Manor series! I loved the backstory of Vanessa and how she learned to cope and allowed herself to live life again. Joe was amazing and so wonderful with Vanessa, I wanted to just hug him tight. All in all, another excellent novella from the master of novellas.

Sure, give it a go.

It's sad that this is out of print. If you're interested in seeing some actual research on how the moon pulls on the human body, it's a decent read. I'm glad to have it and glad I read it. It's not the end all-be all. But it's cool to read that they've found "proof" of what I already have plenty of proof of in my own bones.

The closer the moon gets to the earth during its 28-day cycle, the more full it becomes and the stronger its gravity. As the moon swells in the night sky, its gravity causes high tides, both in the ocean and within our human bodies, which are mostly water. The effect of this internal tide reaches a tipping point for some people (particularly the unchaste and immoderate) just when the moon becomes completely full. The “humors,” or moderating fluids within our bodies, are contained in vessels that are gyroscopically controlled so as to remain in alignment with the earth, however, when the internal tide is high, those fluids spill over, triggering bizarre, ungodly behavior.

To ensure that this displacement of our emotion-regulating fluids would not happen, God originally placed the moon further from the earth, but the accumulating burden of man’s sin has increased the weight and gravity of the earth, continuously pulling the moon closer. The full moon effect some are noticing now will become ever more prevalent as we approach end times. So each time that lesser light of the heavens reaches its maximum brilliance, lock your doors and guard your daughters. If you suffer from full moon effects yourself, perhaps it will be best if you are on the outside of that locked door. Devote yourself to prayer and try to remain in the shadows.

Though a spate of religious quest books have appeared in recent years, Johnson's book is neither a search for the historical Jesus nor a quasi-mystical personal odyssey. Johnson, it seems, is perfectly happy with the faith of his father and as accustomed to the Catholic Church "as a much-loved old teddy bear or a favorite armchair or a smelly old favorite dog." A journalist and historian, Johnson has written an apologia in which he answers such basic questions as "What is God, then?" and "Is there an alternative to God?" His answers surprise, provoke, and even provide comfort.

Historian Johnson (A History of Christianity; A History of the Jews; The Birth of the Modern World Society) switches to a more intimate scale as he tries to provoke readers into examining their beliefs, or lack thereof, in God. Johnson's allegiance to the Catholic Church and its ritual are balanced by an assessment of the history of that institution and his agreement that for "some people, salvation is more likely outside my church-in other churches or no church." Necessarily, Johnson's view on Purgatory, Hell and the Last Judgment reflect his Catholic faith; however, statements such as "The Last Judgment is not so much delivering verdicts as confirming verdicts already reached in the heart of each individual" show Johnson's careful examination of free will and of God's intentions toward creation. Many readers will find Johnson's cranky and opinionated style appealingly personal. His previous work as a historian will ensure this book a significant audience, and, to the extent that the audience is drawn by the author more than by his subject matter, it will not be disappointed. Readers will learn more here about Paul Johnson than about God. The book is not so much a pilgrimage as an assertion of faith--an assertion, not an argument. Some readers, no doubt, will share Johnson's sense of the necessity of God's existence. Some will agree with his dismissive remarks on Russell, Ayer, Sartre, Wells, and a host of other intellectuals who have not shared his belief; some who don't agree will find the remarks amusing (or infuriating) and may be encouraged to take a second look at the thoughts so summarily dismissed. In the end, Johnson asserts that the love and worship of God are about turning our minds--and our bodies. How this book will turn readers depends largely on turns those readers have already taken, but it does contain illuminating insights into Johnson's turn that may contribute to understanding the body of his work. Disappointing...

I am a big fan of Paul Johnson, and sometimes I stand in awe of what he has accomplished as a historian and author: "Modern Times," "The Birth of the Modern," excellent histories of Judaism and Christianity, "Intellectuals" --- well, the man just never stops producing interesting stuff to read, including his recent "Creators."

This book is about his conservative Catholic faith, and I found the portrait of that beguiling and comforting, right up to his chapter on "The Last Judgment." It seemed to me that his reason deserted him there, since a God who would send his own creatures to everlasting torment does not even meet the ethical standards of the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). What would we say about a man who chose to breed Golden Retrievers, and chose to say "Bad dog!" by crucifying the dog upside down over an eternally burning fire? How much more damning would our ethical judgment be, if the man were not raising Golden Retrievers, but was raising creatures which were his own creation?

I suspect this is why the Church of England has dropped the very concept of Hell. Interestingly enough, since the COE is an established religion, this dogma was forced down the throats of COE priests by a council of laymen.

For this and similar reasons, I cannot recommend this book. At all.

Wow: More than I expected; Brain research

Wow, I am surprised with the amount of science they go into here, beginning on the 1st CD with the most current brain research. I feel I am somewhat up to date with current brain research due the the fact my son has a brain disorder, I have been highly motivated to study this. They are really up to date, that is with leading scientist authors, such as Joe Dispenza, Bruce Lipton and so many more.
Two of the authors have Phds. and one is a personal trainer, so you will get the motivational and practical advice as well. What's more is it's certainly in layman's terms. The book also address's the spiritual aspects of health, your body and brain and behavior. Hence the title, God's Plan for Achieving Emotional Wellness. They also present their ideas about what the bible says about health and wholeness. Entertaining, too. I would recommend it, esp if you like have the Christian teachings or attitudes along with the scientific, and motivational.

Old Rail Fence Corners

This is a very special book for anyone interested in history, especially those who had ancestors who passed through Minnesota. It's a collection of stories collected by the Daughters of the Americal Revolution, who felt it was important to record the memories of those individuals who helped settle the state before it was too late. The stories are presented pretty much in the words of the storytellers with little editing. Reading them gives a person some perspective into the many aspects of frontier life and the types of people who formed our nation.

This is an amazing book! I found a 1914 copy of this book, in very fragil condition, and wanted to share it with everyone. It is thrilling to find that it has been reprinted! Anyone who really wants to know what it was like to be a pioneer in the 1800's needs to read this book. I purchased 2 copies, one to share with the Long Lake Pioneer Museum and one to share with friends. Thank you Daughter's of the Revolution for interviewing the remaining pioneer's in 1914 and preserving history as seen from the source.

At 45 years old, I am not a young man, but I am just now finding my Way on the path. But I have very quickly realized that Tim Hogan's books (all of them) are "must have" tools for the kit of every craftsman and searcher. This book shines the light on who we were, who we are, and who we should be. It sits on the shelf of my home library along with Brother Hogan's other books, calling for me to read them again and again, so that I can share them with the world. Ben.

I nearly died when I was 19. That near death experience revealed to me a thread that could be traced among all of the worlds inner traditions. I have been heavily seeking every clue I can find about The Primordial Tradition since then. It is our duty, our responsibility to not let the knowledge of who we are, where we came from, and where we are going die. Brother Hogan is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to unearthing even the subtlest details of this tradition long forgotten by the world of the profane.

About the Author
Mario Lefebvre holds a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in mathematics from the University of Montreal, Canada and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Cambridge, England.  Full professor in the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering of the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal.  Published in numerous papers on applied probability and stochastic processes in international mathematical and engineering journals.
